ALE and Thomasville Police Charge Ten with Gambling Violations

THOMASVILLE -- North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement special agents and Thomasville Police detectives charged ten people and their corporations May 12 with multiple gambling violations.

Agents and officers executed seven search warrants at locations in the City of Thomasville.

The charges stem from previous raids conducted on the businesses April 24 when law enforcement officials seized $44,119 in United States currency, 115 illegal slot machines, gambling paraphernalia and glass pipes (used to inhale controlled substances).

Thomasville Police Chief Jeff Insley said the investigation stemmed from complaints received on the illegal gambling operations. Insley said such gambling operations and other sweepstake server-based operations are in violation of state law and would not be allowed to operate in Thomasville.

Special Agent in Charge Mike Yates of ALE’s Greensboro district office said it is unlawful to possess or operate these types of machines. He added that the operation of these machines often leads to organized crime, robberies and assaults.

“The arrests in Thomasville should serve notice to other illegal gambling operations these types of operations will not be tolerated,” Yates said.
