Four Charged in Death of Randolph County Teen

The N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement Branch concluded their investigation into the alcohol-related death of Colby Haithcock, 16, of Franklinville. Haithcock was the passenger in a 2005 GMC Sierra truck driven by Evan Forge, 17, of Pleasant Garden. The vehicle ran off the road and overturned in the early morning hours of February 12.

Haithcock died at the scene, while Deforge was transported to Moses Cone Hospital. Due to the age of the occupants and the suspected presence of alcohol, the State Highway Patrol asked ALE to investigate the source of alcohol.

“After an extensive investigation, we determined alcohol did have a contributing presence in the accident, which resulted in the death of Mr. Haithcock”, said Special Agent in Charge Rodney Beckom.

Special Agents charged four people as a result of their investigation. Two brothers, hosting a private party, were the source of the alcohol, according to ALE. Both alcohol and marijuana were present at the party which was attended by several youths under the age of 21. Further evidence revealed at least three individuals tried to clean up the party location after learning of the accident. Haithcock and Deforge had attended the party.

“I cannot begin to imagine the pain this incident has caused the entire community in general, and the Haithcock family in particular,” Beckom said. “This is why the impact of alcohol on youth should never be underestimated.”

Special agents have charged the two brothers and two other youths who were either involved with the party or in attendance. The State Highway Patrol previously charged Deforge with DWI, and this past week, charged the teen with felony death by motor vehicle. Additional charges are forthcoming.
