SBI Charges Inmate with Attempted Murder on Prison Administrator

RALEIGH -- The State Bureau of Investigation has charged inmate Thomas Michael Accardi (0861582) with one count of Attempted First Degree Murder and one count of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury. Inmate Accardi went before the magistrate in Anson County this morning for the assault on David Mitchell, administrator at Lanesboro Correctional Institution.

Accardi has been placed under a $500,000 secured bond. His next court date is November 5, 2014. He has been moved to Polk Correctional Institution under High Security Maximum Control (HCON).

The assault took place at approximately 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10. Administrator Mitchell has returned to work.

The Department of Public Safety and the Polkton Police Department assisted in the investigation.

“This incident is a serious reminder of the potentially dangerous jobs of corrections employees,” said David Guice, commissioner of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice. “Every day they put their lives on the line to help ensure public safety.”
