SBI identifies man shot after he led police on vehicle chase

RALEIGH -- The State Bureau of Investigation is releasing the name of the man shot by deputies in Greenville early this morning.

Tyshaun Fields, 25, of Ayden, was shot in the left leg following a vehicle chase by Ayden Police Department officers and Pitt County Sheriff’s Office deputies at approximately 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.  Fields allegedly drove away from a vehicle stop in Ayden by police officers.  Ayden police officers were joined by two Pitt County Sheriff’s Office deputies in a vehicle pursuit of Fields.

According to the SBI, the vehicle chase ended when Fields drove into the parking lot of Frontgate Apartments on Kristen Drive where the incident escalated and the deputies fired their weapons on Fields’ vehicle.  A firearm was recovered from the scene.

Fields was taken into custody for traffic related offenses and for possession of marijuana. He was transported to Vidant Hospital where he is undergoing treatment. 

The SBI is investigating this shooting.
