The State Bureau of Investigations has five major divisions, including the N.C. Information Sharing and Analysis Center.

The SBI has 254 sworn positions and 192 non-sworn positions.  SBI personnel work across the state in one of eight district offices or in state headquarters in Raleigh.

SBI Leadership
The SBI has a director who is appointed for an eight-year term by the governor, a deputy director, a Human Resources director, four assistant directors and a legal advisor.

Field Operations
The Field Operations Division is divided into the East and the West. Agents investigate crimes such as homicides, officer-involved shootings, arson, methamphetamine labs, illegal prescription drug use, financial crimes, and computer crimes, particularly those of child sexual exploitation.  

Tactical Services Unit 
The Tactical Services Unit responds to hostage situations, barricaded suspects, explosive devices, high risk search warrants and arrests and other high-level security events. 

Professional Standards 
This division conducts and coordinates certain public corruption and government official misconduct investigations, as well as investigations for the N. C. Judicial Standards Commission.

Support Services
Support Services oversees training of State Bureau of Investigation agents and analysts who help local law enforcement solve crime.  This section oversees Financial Services, Logistics, Information Technology, Case Records Management, Crime Reports, the Criminal Information and ID Section and Training.
