SBI Investigating 1976 Bladen Murder Case

1/23/2015

RALEIGH -- The State Bureau of Investigation continues an investigation of the reopened 1976 Josephine and Aileen Davis murders in Bladen County and will not close the case until all viable leads have been exhausted.

The SBI reopened the case in February, 2013 at the request of District Attorney Jon David when evidence used to convict Joseph Sledge for the homicides was unanimously determined by the North Carolina Innocence Commission to be questionable and warranted a judicial review.

The SBI has since worked closely with District Attorney Jon David, the Innocence Commission and the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence to pursue the new information uncovered by the commission which has led to the “actual innocence” of Sledge on Friday.

The SBI is continuing this investigation at the request of District Attorney David.
