RALEIGH -- The SBI is releasing the names of the two officers involved in the shooting death of Ian Trevor Sherrod, the man who witnesses say murdered three people in Tarboro on Saturday, Feb. 28.
Sergeant K.N. Morris of the Tarboro Police Department and Deputy D.K. Winders of the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Department located Sherrod, 40, in a downtown Tarboro parking lot where Sherrod pointed a gun at the officers and they fired at him, resulting in Sherrod’s death. The officers found Sherrod during a search for him after investigators quickly determined from witnesses that Sherrod was responsible for the three homicides.
The SBI is focusing their investigation on the police-involved shooting of Sherrod at the request of the police department, sheriff’s department and the district attorney’s office. The Tarboro Police Department is investigating the three murders.
Morris and Winders are on paid administrative leave from their respective departments.
