SBI Behavioral Threat Assessment (BeTA) Unit to Preempt Incidents of Mass Violence

4/22/2019

Raleigh, NC – The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is proud to announce the Behavioral Threat Assessment (BeTA) Unit whose focus is to work with local law enforcement and local communities to identify, investigate, assess and manage threats of targeted attacks such as mass violence at schools, places of worship or other areas of large gatherings.

After the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last year, SBI Director Robert Schurmeier began brainstorming how the Bureau could support law enforcement across the state in preventing these types of attacks.  Together, Director Schurmeier and UNC System Associate Vice President of Campus Safety & Emergency Operations, Brent Herron, a former US Secret Service Agent, came up with the BeTA Unit as a resource to assist local law enforcement in identifying and managing individuals who may be on the pathway to committing targeted violent acts in their communities.  It’s a collaborative effort between the SBI, the UNC System, the Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement.

The SBI is holding a threat management training course in conjunction with the UNC Greensboro Police Department and the UNC System for local and state law enforcement agencies on Tuesday, April 23, 2019.  The training will take place at the UNC Greensboro Police Department located at 1200 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27406.  Media interested in covering the training and learning more about the BeTA Unit will be allowed to get B-roll and/or photos of the classroom instruction at 9:30am.  A press briefing will follow at 10am and there will be another photo-op with members of the BeTA Unit at approximately 11 am.  If you are planning to attend Tuesday, please email agrube@ncsbi.gov and arrive at the UNCG Police Department by 9:15am.
