RALEIGH -- Governor Pat McCrory congratulated Bernard W. (B.W.) Collier II whose nomination as director of the State Bureau of Investigation was unanimously approved by the House and Senate, completing his confirmation by the General Assembly. Collier will oversee the operations of more than 300 SBI and Alcohol Law Enforcement special agents located in offices across the state.
“B.W. Collier is a man of great integrity and intelligence. His proven experience and capable leadership, ably demonstrated as acting director, are assets to the men and women working in this professional law enforcement agency,” Governor McCrory said. “I want to thank members of the House and Senate for their thoughtful consideration and unanimous approval of his nomination.”
In August of 2014, Governor McCrory named Collier as acting director of the SBI. In February, the governor nominated him for an eight-year term.
Collier served as an SBI special agent for 26 years, and was named director of Alcohol Law Enforcement in October 2013.
During his tenure with the SBI, Collier served as a drug investigator, pilot, arson and crime scene agent, canine handler, technical agent and bomb squad commander. Collier was director and special agent in charge of the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center, an SBI section that deals with criminal information and intelligence gathering.
Collier is a North Carolina native and N.C. State University graduate. He served in the N.C. Army National Guard from 1983 to 1989. His mother is a retired school teacher and his father is a retired State Highway Patrol lieutenant. Collier and his wife, Ann, have two grown children.
In 2014, the General Assembly transferred the State Bureau of Investigation from the North Carolina Department of Justice to the N.C. Department of Public Safety where it now operates as an independent agency.
