SBI Agents Investigating Greensboro Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty
(Raleigh, NC) – On December 23, 2024, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) received a request from the Guilford County District Attorney to investigate the shooting death of Officer Michael Horan of the Greensboro Police Department. Just before 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2024, a call was made to 911 reporting a suspicious person, possibly armed, at the Food Lion located at 4709 Lawndale Drive in Greensboro. Officer Horan was the first to arrive on the scene and made contact with the individual inside the store. After a brief struggle, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the officer before leaving the scene in a vehicle. The officer did not have time to draw or fire his weapon.
After approximately 1:00 p.m., the suspect was located in Johnston County driving a vehicle. Deputies with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) began a pursuit and were joined by deputies from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) when he entered Sutton Town until the North Carolina State Highway Patrol took over and initiated the PIT maneuver. Eventually, they were able to stop the vehicle on I-40 near mile marker 360 at the Duplin County line and the suspect was taken into custody without incident. Charges are pending. Additional information will be provided at a later time.
