A woman was scheduled to appear in a Bertie County courtroom today on drug trafficking charges following her arrest Monday, by the State Bureau of Investigation.
The SBI’s Diversion and Environmental Crimes Unit arrested Shanita Michelle Newton, 27, of Greenville, on two felony counts of trafficking in opiates and two felony counts of obtaining controlled substances by fraud.
Newton obtained multiple Oxycodone tablets through fraudulent activities.
Newton was booked into the Bertie Martin regional jail after being given a $200,000 secured bond by the magistrate.
Newton and two other individuals arrested Monday, are part of a larger drug ring. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected.
The investigation began after Eastern Urology in Greenville, provided information to the SBI.
The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the arrest of Newton.
