SBI Investigating Deputy-Involved Shooting Involving Off-Duty Deputy

with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office

Raleigh, NC –  On Wednesday, February 24, 2021, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), was requested by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a shooting that occurred in the 4500 block of Barnards Landing Road in Wilmington, North Carolina, at approximately 12:42 pm.  Per eyewitness accounts, the shooting occurred following an incident where Bart Anthony Coniglio (DOB: 05/29/1980) forcibly entered a family member’s residence on Barnards Landing Road.  The family member and a friend who were inside the home, exited the residence and ran to a nearby neighbor’s home.  The neighbor is a deputy with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and was off-duty at the time.  The family member entered the off-duty deputy’s home as Coniglio chased after them.  Coniglio then forcibly entered the deputy’s home where a physical altercation ensued that resulted in the off-duty deputy subsequently shooting Coniglio.  Coniglio was transported to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he is currently being treated.  The investigation is ongoing at this time.  No additional information is available.
