SBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Yancey County

BURNSVILLE – The State Bureau of Investigation reports that Bobby Lovin, 62, was shot and killed by Yancey County Sheriff Deputy Billy J. Casteel, 36, on Friday, March 16, following  a domestic violence call at  Uncle Harvey’s Lane. An active domestic violence protective order was in place against Lovin. He had allegedly broken into his wife’s home and was wielding an axe when Casteel arrived on scene shortly after 8 p.m.  Lovin ignored Casteel’s commands to drop the weapon, and as Lovin moved closer to his wife, Casteel fired one shot, killing Lovin.

An autopsy on Lovin is being conducted today.  The SBI’s investigation is on-going.
