LUMBERTON – The State Bureau of Investigation has been requested to investigate a State Highway Patrol (SHP) trooper involved shooting that occurred after 8:00 p.m., yesterday. The request was made by the SHP shortly after the shooting occurred near the intersection of Hilton and W. Fifth Streets in Lumberton.
The trooper and two members of the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office were assisting with search and rescue efforts in the flooded downtown Lumberton area. The shooting took place in swift water that was approximately three to four feet deep and resulted in a male succumbing to injuries.
Multiple SBI and Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) agents responded to the area to conduct the independent criminal investigation. The identity of the victim will not be confirmed by the SBI until the autopsy has been completed. The identities of the law enforcement officers will be provided after each have been interviewed.
Facts about the circumstances leading up to the shooting are being sought through all available means. Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call the SBI’s Southeastern District in Fayetteville at (910) 486-1262.
Upon conclusion of the investigation, the SBI will provide the complete case file to the Robeson County District Attorney.
