FAQ - National Instant Criminal Search (NICS)
FAQ - National Instant Criminal Search (NICS)
Why was I denied the right to purchase a gun? And what can I do about it?
File an appeal with the FBI at
www.fbi.gov/nics
After filing for an appeal and having the denial overturned, I was able to purchase a firearm. I’ve tried to purchase another firearm and was denied again. What is happening?
Contact the NICS Section Customer Service at 877-324-6427.
I am uncomfortable giving out my SSN. On the 4473-federal form giving an SSN is optional. Why would I need to provide my SSN?
Your SSN is unique to you. The more unique information you can provide the more accurate the background check is, and it can also prevent delays.
Is there a way to find out the current status of my appeal request?
The FBI is no longer performing status checks on NICS appeals. You will receive written
notification when your appeal has been processed. Appeal cases are worked in the order in which
they are received.
